INTERVIEWING A NANNY FOR THE FIRST TIME?
Finding the right nanny can feel overwhelming, especially if you've never interviewed one before. Our free Parent Interview Guide will help you prepare, ask the right questions and feel confident in choosing the best childcare for your family.
A Parent's Guide to Interviewing a Nanny
Hiring a nanny is a big decision. You're inviting someone into your home and trusting them with the most important people in your life. If you've never interviewed a nanny before, it's completely normal to feel unsure about where to start.
At Cheshire Nannies, I carefully vet every candidate before introducing them to families, but the interview is your opportunity to get to know the person behind the profile and decide whether they're the right fit for your family.
Before the Interview
Think about what is most important to your family before you meet any candidates.
Consider:
-
Your working hours and childcare requirements.
-
The ages and personalities of your children.
-
Any additional duties you would like help with.
-
The qualities that matter most to you, such as experience, flexibility or a calm, nurturing approach.
Having a clear picture of your family's needs will help you ask relevant questions and compare candidates fairly.
Questions You Could Ask
Tell us about your childcare experience.
This gives the nanny the opportunity to talk about their previous roles, the ages of children they've cared for and what they enjoy most about working with families.
Why did you choose to become a nanny?
This question helps you understand their passion for childcare and what motivates them in their role.
How would you spend a typical day with our child?
Listen for answers that include a balance of play, learning, outdoor activities and routines that are appropriate for your child's age.
How do you manage challenging behaviour?
Every child has difficult moments. A good nanny should be able to explain how they use positive, age-appropriate strategies while remaining calm and consistent.
What activities do you enjoy planning for children?
This gives you an idea of how creative and engaging they are, whether they enjoy crafts, outdoor adventures, reading, baking or educational activities.
How do you communicate with parents?
Good communication is key to a successful working relationship. Ask how they like to share updates about your child's day, routines and achievements.
Do you have any questions for us?
An experienced nanny will often have questions too. They may ask about your child's routine, interests, family values or expectations, which shows they are genuinely thinking about whether they are the right fit.
Remember – It's About the Right Match
There isn't a "perfect" answer to every question. The most important thing is finding someone whose personality, childcare approach and communication style suit your family.
